Anal gland disease is very common in dogs. These are the same glands that a skunk sprays you with. Normally, the glands are expressed when your dog has a bowel movement. In certain instances, a dog may have a difficult time emptying them by themselves. If your pet is showing signs of irritation from its anal glands such as scooting their bum or licking back there, it is recommended to have them checked. Some dogs have to have them expressed every 6 weeks and others may never have an issue.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

Expressing anal glands is considered a medical procedure and best done by a doctor or veterinary technician. We are able to express them gently while at the same time, monitoring the expressed material for signs of infection. Leave the stinky part to us!

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

Often a dog will drag his bum on the carpet to help release the anal glands. If you are seeing this on a regular basis, it is a good idea to get those glands checked. Other signs of a potential issue are licking at the area under the tail and around the anus or perineal area excessively.
